Hardware

Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer system or other electronic device, i.e. those parts that can be touched and seen. Zebra MC3000xx, TC51, and TC70 Handheld Scanners, These are portable, rugged handheld scanners used to: Scan package barcodes, collect real-time data about packages, and communicate with the central database to update package status. It is reliable in tough environments, has fast scanning capabilities, and has user-friendly interfaces. If Upgrade to higher bandwidth Wi-Fi 6 technology to handle real-time data transfer more efficiently during peak operations or Enhanced screen size and resolution for more data visibility, the effectiveness could be improved again.

The company warehouse is equipped with desktop computers and high-performance CPUs, which serve as central hubs for data processing and management. the warehouse computers are configured with Intel Core i7 processors paired with 16GB of RAM, to ensure smooth performance when running resource-intensive applications like warehouse management systems or enterprise resource planning tools. High-quality graphics cards, such as NVIDIA GTX series, to support visualization of warehouse layouts or performance dashboards. To further enhance efficiency, Upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 technology could optimize real-time communication between handheld devices and the central system. Using larger and high-resolution monitors on desktop computers would provide clearer visibility of data, improving productivity and accuracy.

Software

Software refers to a set of instructions, data, or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks. Software is programs and data that run on hardware. software is mainly divided into operating systems for handheld devices, Amazon's systems, and systems run in warehouses. These devices typically run an Android-based operating system and provide a user-friendly interface that makes it easy for warehouse workers to scan packages and collect data in real-time. Amazon Aurora is a relational database service provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that runs on AWS infrastructure with a customized Linux version of the underlying operating system optimized for performance and security. Warehouse automation and optimization systems rely on Linux To meet the real-time control needs of automation equipment.

Application Software

Application software is a type of software designed to perform specific tasks or functions for users. Warehouse Automation & Optimization (WAO) is a specialized software developed for Amazon’s logistics operations. It helps sort, track, and optimize the movement of packages within the sortation center.

New Technologies

Some new technologies today would be AI (artificial intelligence), cybersecurity, robotics, cloud computing, etc. With all these new technologies coming out, companies and businesses are able to use these technologies to continue their growth and so some of these new technologies can help the majority of companies. Amazon sortation centers are able to apply some new technology especially ones that are able to help the employees sort packages making it faster and efficient. For amazon, it’s been implementing some of these technologies as some examples of this would be robotics and AI. Many amazon warehouses have robots around the area to help create a safer environment plus boost the productivity within the warehouse.

Metadata

The textbook defines metadata as “data that describes data.” An example of this would be how we keep track of all the packages and their information on what the product is, where it’s shipped, who it’s for, etc. Some files and fields for amazon warehouse would be the usage of aws. These are ways amazon is able to tell what to do with the package and when they should deliver them.

Database Management System

Now onto Amazon’s Database Management System. In layman's terms Database Management Systems are software that serve the role of safely obtaining, storing, and managing data.

Database Application

Now onto Amazon’s Database Management Systems. In layman's terms Database Management Systems are software that serve the role of safely obtaining, storing, and managing data.  Amazon uses a special mix of Database Management Systems and they are as follows: Amazon Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB, ElastiCache, Redshift, Neptune, Timestream, and QLDB. Amazon uses a plethora of different systems to adhere to the various company needs. For example, Amazon Neptune is a database created for fraud detection, and QLDB is for tracking Amazon’s transaction records. Amazon also uses DynamoDB which allows for Amazon to manage their vast amounts of data to fuel operations and services. More specifically, it is a NoSQL database service that allows Amazon to provide features such as real-time tracking, process data to fuel their website, as well as services like Prime Video, Alexa.

In order for these DBMS systems to be effective, however, Amazon utilizes data applications to bring the effects of these management systems to life. These data applications are separate from their management systems, but simply are forms, reports and queries. These data applications are used in conjunction with DBMS systems to help Amazon improve and strengthen various aspects of their company.

To illustrate this as an example, the human body is made up of many bones, which can represent the DBMS. But without a working brain and nervous system to use these bones, they are useless. So just as a DBMS is powerful, without the data applications that Amazon uses, their effect would be miniscule.

Amazon uses not just one, but several data applications to fuel their Database Management Systems. A few of the applications that Amazon uses quite often are, inventory management, customer relationship management, analytics and reporting, and order processing and fulfillment. These applications assist in helping Amazon to achieve consumer goals by efficiently utilizing the data that is made available to them, ensuring that they get the most out of their data consumption

New Technologies for Databases

The new types of technologies for databases are Cloud, Graph, NoSQL and AI-integrated Databases, as well for Blockchain. Cloud helps with high scalability and allow access remotely, for example Amazon Aurora, which is used by Amazon CDW5. Graph is meant to manage complex relationships within the logistic networks. NoSQL best suits when there is unstructured data, capable of helping on flexible data requirements. AI-integrated mainly seen for predictive analytics and optimizing workflows. Lastly, Blockchain is to secure and transport data tracking for mitigating theft and tracking packages. Amazon already uses the cloud based systems like Aurora, integrating AI could promote package flow optimization, and additionally blockchain can leverage on the secure tracking and keep track of logistics.

Local Area Network (LAN)

Local Area Network is what LAN stands for, LAN is a network which connects devices and computers in a certain area such as an office or apartment building. Its components are router, switch and ethernet cables being the networking hardware, also network software the operating systems so it can steady the connection. A computer or printer that can be connected to as the end device. Lastly, the WIFI or ethernet connection. Amazon CDW5 does indeed have a LAN connection for its scanners and track real time data transfers, integrating the broader system supporting efficient package management.

Internet

The Internet is a global network that connects millions of public, private, business, government and even academic institutions networks. Amazon’s CDW 5 connects through high speed broadband supported through Amazon’s cloud AWS. Ensuring live updates and synchronization with external logistic partners like FedEx and UPS. The domain associated with their name would be amazon.com but as for Amazon’s CDW5 it operated in subdomains under Amazon’s AWS infrastructure.

The Clou

dThe cloud is a network of remote servers that store, process and manage data. The cloud eliminates the need for on site servers as it uses the internet. The cloud is important because it lets you scale your company with easy accessibility at a low cost. The cloud allows access to data without needing physical infrastructure. The cloud allows CDW5 to maintain data accessibility and reliability while being able to minimize the infrastructure associated with traditional hardware

CDW5 uses Amazon Web Services(AWS) as its cloud based information system. AWS is primarily IaaS (infrastructure as a System) because it is the core infrastructure needed to scale, build, and host information. AWS uses IaaS, PaaS and SaaS as options. The core infrastructure relies heavily on IaaS with Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to scale its computing power. AWS also utilizes PaaS tools such as the Elastic Beanstalk Streamline application along with SaaS like Amazon Chime. AWS is one the most versatile clouds and it helps CDW5 to achieve scalability and operational efficiency.

Potential Problems

Some issues or problems with CDW5 networks include bandwidth issues, network congestion, security and external system integration issues. AWS cloud systems have some solutions to these problems. For bandwidth and network congestion AWS Direct Connect provides private connections to reduce the amount of traffic. AWS Shield will protect the cloud from DDoS attacks. As for integration issues AWS Lambda can automate workflows and integrate systems without needing a server. As a recommendation I would suggest that CDW5 should adopt AWS CloudWatch to proactively identify bottlenecks, minimize operational disruptions and monitor performance metrics to ensure the large scale operational optimizations.
